What is Documentary Style Photography Anyway?

What is Documentary Photography for Clients (is it the same as Lifestyle)?

I’ve just seen this on your site Marie. I always struggle to explain to my clients what a documentary style shoot is, and I think this will help a lot. Thanks so much 🙂

This is an awesome post to explain what documentary style photography really is. I always struggle with what to write on my website to explain this in the best possible way.
No one does it better than Marie Masse!

Love this! It’s so hard to get people to understand what a documentary shoot is, and once I get to the house they always feel like that have to pose. Thanks for the description:)

❤️❤️This is exactly what I want to shoot!!. I would love to know how to market for this style. It’s what I love. I typically shoot my day to day without asking my family to look at me and it’s more relaxed for everyone. I would love to offer this to clients but just don’t know how

I went through the process to get the free download but I am not getting the confirmation email. I tried the process a 2nd time just to make sure I entered the correct email address, but I still don’t have it. I’ve checked my junk mail and other folders, but it’s not there.

    Please help!

Today has been a super bad/down/stressful/overwhelming day for me. Then I stumbled upon a sponsored post about documentary photography, read it, and realized I totally wrote this idea off just a few weeks ago! I thought, I want to be someone’s paparazzi. I always get to shoots and think, why are people asking me to tell them what to do?! Just be there and I’ll get it!
Then I got into my head, and by the next day I thought, who would actually want that or pay for it. I love God’s timing and his answers. Though I had a bad day due to my own attitude, he could not have placed that sponsored add in my life at a better moment. Then I started googling, and found this and a couple other sites. Thank you. For being on the same page as my mind creatively, and for writing this. I needed it!

What an awesome story! It really is amazing how the right nuggets of information come to us at just the right time. This just happened to me this past Monday (on a separate topic), so I totally get it. I hope our site reaffirms where your heart is leading you, Chani!

  11. I’m so inspired by this type of work and would love to get in to it. I’m always struggling as a photographer with pricing my work. How much would you recommend charging for a day for a documentary shoot?

    • MarieMasse says:

Gosh that’s a loaded question, Alicia! 🙂 Some photographers charge rates comparative to weddings – several thousand. Others are much lower in their pricing. It should start with what you want to make and then up level your marketing language to make sure you are attracting the people who you can serve best / are happy to invest in why they want a day in the life. I hope that makes sense!
