Mother’s Day 2015, my family and I took a few rafts down the Itchetucknee River located in North Central Florida. I was 18 weeks pregnant and hadn’t been down the river in almost five years since before I had my first child.
I wanted to bring the camera, but was worried about it getting wet, or even worse, dropping it in the river. But as always, the benefits outweighed the risks for me, and that poor camera came along for the ride in a Ziploc baggy.
I started by photographing each event and was mighty limited with my 50mm lens once in the boat with my 3-year-old son. It took a lot of convincing that mama couldn’t play along in the water pistol game, because of my camera.
I always try and get into a few images when I can, and hell, since the day was all about me anyway, I handed the camera to my reluctant husband for a few photos, and I’m always glad I did.
The day was peaceful and all about observations. As the scenery changed every few minutes, so did each new interest, and I made sure to photograph each occurrence that made me happy.
